The RDI Instructor Ballistic Shield Program is a condensed, three-day course designed for patrol and tactical officers transitioning to instructor roles. This instructor-level training emphasizes the operational use and instructional techniques of ballistic shields, leveraging years of practical experience to maximize their effectiveness in law enforcement scenarios. The course curriculum, rigorously tested under stressful conditions, covers a range of essential tactics including deliberate clearance, low light operations, threshold management, and crisis entry responses.
The program begins with a thorough introduction to ballistic shields, addressing common misconceptions and the differences between defensive and offensive usage. It features practical drills such as running the gun with the shield, handling malfunctions, and engaging targets under movement and limited visibility. The subsequent days focus on advanced shield maneuvers and scenario-based training, including force-on-force exercises and specialized situations like hostage rescues and vehicle assaults.
Participants must be certified firearms instructors and will learn not only the tactical applications but also how to effectively teach and maintain a ballistic shield program within their agencies.
